What is SMATV MATV
WHAT IS A SMATV AND MATV SYSTEM?
SMATV means ‘Satellite Master Antenna Television’ which is a system that uses multiple satellites to create a single integrated cable signal for distribution. It is commonly used for buildings which have a network of televisions, like hotels and hospitals. This can connect up to 80 channels at a time, so each TV could have something different to watch.

What is SMATV?
SMATV stands for ‘Satellite Master Antenna Television’ and refers to a system that uses multiple satellite and broadcast signals to create a single integrated cable signal for distribution to a cabling network.
How does it Work?
SMATV systems generally work alongside an MATV system. We install a satellite dish and TV antenna to receive the signal from the service providers. This signal is fed into electronic equipment: a headend, which enables the signals to be balanced and distributed throughout the TV system. This system can also allow for the provisioning of in-house channels to be transmitted alongside the free-to-air and subscription channels.
SuperTech can offer a full design, installation, and maintenance service for SMATV systems. From 8 channels to 80 channels, Free-to-Air and Subscription Channels, all equipment is of a professional high definition standard. Off-site remote access can be offered to monitor the system and make channel changes. Whether this is a new installation or an upgrade of an existing system, it is carried out with the least amount of disruption possible.
MATV is a ‘Master Antenna Television’ which is similar to SMATV but does not use satellites. Instead, it uses aerial, DAB and FM connections to supply Free-To-Guest channels to the television system.

How does it Work
An MATV system is basically a network of cables and specially designed components that process and amplify TV and FM signals and distribute them from one central location. If there were 100 TV sets in a building, it would be extremely expensive to Install and maintain 100 separate antennas. Not only would It be unsightly, but reception would suffer because that many antennas would interact with each other, causing interference problems.
A mass of commercial premises including hotels, offices, housing developments and holiday parks, now utilize some form of structured cable system to supply an array of different programs and information services to the end user customers.
A modern MATV/SMATV system can carry digital television signals from an antenna and satellite signals from a satellite dish, while a MATV system carries only free-to-air signals. Many companies use the term MATV to describe the RF Distribution System. Some MATV systems in use today are more than 30 years old and unsuitable for carrying digital television signals. These will need to be surveyed and may require modification or replacement.
In a typical MATV system:
- The antenna can be UHF, VHF or a combination UHF/VHF dependent on the location of the project receiving the digital TV signal.
- A distribution network then delivers all television signals to a socket outlet in each household or room location. There can be more than one outlet per household, but only one TV set can be connected to each outlet.
- How the distribution network is configured will depend on the number of units and floors in the building.
